Ido Portal – Movement Culture on Instagram: “Imagine being busy your whole life learning more and more new words but never actually making use of them in a sentence.Similarly, learning new movementS is where many get stuck at with ‘movement’. Yes, certain repertoire and vocabulary is needed at start but it’s actually the ‘baby phase’ of a movement practice which should be followed by other interesting phases that put it all to USE. Essentially, make sure to establish the ‘What’ but move on to ‘How’, ‘When’, ‘Where’ and also ‘Why’. Improvisation is one of the most important platforms of application in most evolved practices (movement, fighting, music, dance, etc) and yet so few are engaging in that mode of doing out of fear, over focus on the ‘Wow’, inability to establish proper systems leading up to it, lack of understanding, lack of maturity, doing only ‘what you’re good at’, doing only what you enjoy and other limited points of view that cant serve us for a lifetime of practice and discovery. Note: I do not know the movements I’m going to do next while moving in this video anymore than you know the next words that will come out of your mouth and yet I know the origin, principle, ‘sketch’ and prototype of all these movements as much as you know the words you are using daily. Nothing fancy here, nothing ‘difficult’, if one focuses on the ‘what’ is performed here, yet shifting the focus to the ‘how’ might present a different picture to those with a trained eye.#movementculture #idoportal”

Ido Portal – Movement Culture on Instagram: “I’ve studied the work of hundreds and shared with tens of thousands (maybe more) my own perspective from a far. I’ve had the chance to learn from, in person, a day here or a unique week there from dozens and I taught many thousands with such an intensity of meetings. I have the honor to call ‘my teachers’ only a few, similarly I have the honor of calling ‘my students’ only a handful of people. These terms are overused, abused, destroyed… when we truly want to use them, they have lost their meaning because we throw them around carelessly, prematurely. They belong to a special category of precious words, their origin in the older, more ancient languages always shows something MORE on their true essence: ‘the one who dispels darkness’, the ‘one who points at the path’, etc… A teacher is a formative force in one’s life but that’s not enough for me, in my eyes it’s also about the care, the connection, the tie of lives that is formed and constantly fed and cared for by both parties. Jacob Daskal(@daskalojacob) is one of my teachers for many years now. He says he teaches boxing but I didn’t notice…. I learn a lot from what he says but also from what he does not mention. Still at 50+, putting the gear on and getting in with us to give a precious lesson ‘on the gloves’ as teachers of old used to do, while they could. He doesn’t hold mitts much anymore, doesn’t entertain the fitness-boxing enthusiasts nor the zero emotional control crowd who frequent boxing gyms but is truly interested in sharing something deeper on all layers of this amazing discipline: psychology, movement, tactics, strategy, chaos, the self. I’m fortunate. #movementculture #idoportal”

Upgrade your passion to obsession is a favorite motto of mine.

Ido Portal – Movement Culture on Instagram: “Upgrade your passion to obsession is a favorite motto of mine. While passion lasts in the good times, obsession will cut through the bad ones.People like to warm their hands on the fire like results of the obsessive mind but often end up rethinking their choice to come close once things get too hot for their taste. ‘Big things’ which are achieved with obsession are not the goal but those who go to distance can achieve ANY goal using their razor sharpened mind, so when you are ready to see through and move on from ‘big (lil’) things’ you can get the REAL work done. “When chopping wood, expect splinters to fly…”#movementculture #idoportal”
